Having my studio at a maker’s space opens many opportunities for me and my artistic journey! I never saw my leather work taking me into sheath making- yet here I am!
The photos of the two knives you see, are made in tandem by two local blacksmiths, Jeremy and Jim. They both teach the blacksmithing courses at the DIY Cave here in Bend Oregon. Occasionally, they drop sharp knives off, for me to cover them.
The first knife is a long blade. It’s sheath is a black dyed horse butt hide, encased in a distressed ox blood frog, which is a universal fit. Thus you can wear it on either side of your body!
Dimensions: Blade: 8 1/4” L x 1 1/8” W Handle: 4 3/4” L x 1” W
The second knife is a shorter more rounded blade. It’s sheath is a vintage dye mix of browns and black to age the horse butt leather. This is a right-handed sheath.
Dimensions: Blade: 7” L x 2 3/4 “ W Handle: 4 1/4” L x 1” W
These are a collaboration project, the knives and sheaths are sold together. The knives are priced at $350 each, paid to Jim and Jeremy. While the sheaths are $125 with the proceeds going to Art & Sol.
